But supporters will not see their No17 in action at St Andrew’s because he is not a registered player.

It is instead the number surprisingly given to pop star and minority shareholder Ed Sheeran.

The singer is an Ipswich superfan and he owns 1.4 per cent of the club.

Sheeran, 34, has been given a kit number as part of a publicity stunt and he has had the shirt since the 2021/22 season.

But fans were still in disbelief to see his name on the squad list.

One said: “Ed Sheeran No17. Game has gone.”

A second joked: “Should be letting No17 go when your legs don’t work like they used to before.”

Another commented: “It’s like West Ham giving Danny Dyer a squad number.”

More laughed: “About time you gave that Sheeran a game.”

Ipswich’s jerseys last season were sponsored by “+-=÷x Tour” – in reference to the singer’s previous albums.

Sheeran was a regular at Portman Road as his club were relegated from the Premier League.

He caused huge controversy in November after gatecrashing an interview with Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

Sheeran later admitted the awkward moment came as he “had about ten pints” and “did not realise” the boss was speaking live on TV.
