MICAH RICHARDS has revealed the role John Terry played in his career coming to an early end.

Richards hung up his boots in 2019 after a three-year spell at Aston Villa and it was Terry’s arrival that inadvertently saw his time with the Villans come to an end.

Terry arrived at Villa Park in 2017 after an incredible career with Chelsea making over 700 appearances for The Blues.

And then-manager Steve Bruce had intended to have Richards line up alongside the England legend in a back three as Villa searched for promotion back into the Premier League.

However Terry wasn’t keen on the idea of playing in a different defensive system and his six-word request to Bruce saw Richards’ play-time take a huge blow.

Speaking on BBC’s MOTD Top 10 podcast, Richards said: “He [Steve Bruce] told me he was going to play me that season.

“And we signed John Terry. So, it was going to be me on the right of the three, John Terry and James Chester.

“JT basically came to Villa and said ‘I’m not playing in a three’.

“So Steve Bruce pulls me and he says ‘well, I’ve got to play JT’ and he had James Chester at Hull so I knew the writing was on the wall then.”

As a result of the new look setup at the back, Richards failed to make a single appearance in the 2017/18 season.

And after picking up a knee injury the following year he was unable to return to the pitch and ended up calling quits on his career.

However the former Cityzen doesn’t seem to hold any grudges against Terry or Bruce for the situation despite it being the beginning of the end for his career.
