Wolves vs Man City preview
Opening-day specialists Manchester City launch their 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a trip to relegation candidates Wolves on Saturday evening.
Pep Guardiola’s side could be considered a little undercooked, having played just one pre-season friendly – a 2-0 win over Palermo on August 9.
Nevertheless, City remain strong favourites to bag three points and extend their dominant head-to-head record against Wolves.
The Cityzens have won nine of their last 10 meetings with the Midlands side, racking up 28 goals and four clean sheets in the process.
They also boast an impeccable opening-day record – 13 wins in their last 14 season openers, and this will be the ninth consecutive Premier League campaign they begin on the road. They’ve won seven of the last eight of those, scoring 19 goals and conceding just twice.
In fact, City have lost just one of their last 31 Premier League matches in August (W26 D4) — so confidence will be high, even if the title talk hasn’t been as loud as usual.
Last season’s third-place finish, 13 points adrift of champions Liverpool, has prompted a shake-up. City have spent over £300million in the last eight months and overseen a coaching staff overhaul, including the arrival of Jurgen Klopp’s former No.2 Pep Lijnders as assistant manager.
While City gear up for a renewed title charge, Wolves are simply aiming to survive.
Vitor Pereira steadied the ship last season, guiding Wolves to a comfortable finish – 17 points clear of the drop.
But selling Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri, arguably their two best players, has raised serious concerns about another relegation scrap.
In their place, Wolves have brought in Fer Lopez, Jhon Arias and David Moller Wolfe, while Jorgen Strand Larsen’s loan deal was made permanent – a combined outlay of around £70million.
All four will need to hit the ground running, especially given a worrying pre-season that included three straight defeats and a draw against Championship side Stoke.

Given their limited pre-season action, the Club World Cup might be the best barometer of how Manchester City will fare on Saturday – and if that’s anything to go by, goals are on the menu.
City netted 16 goals in four matches during this summer’s tournament, including a 5-1 thrashing of Juventus.
They’ve also hit 3+ goals in three of their last six visits to Molineux, and face a Wolves side who often struggle when underdogs at home – losing eight of 11 Premier League matches last season.
Add to that Wolves’ winless pre-season, which saw them concede eight goals in five games.
