FANS are in uproar after Eberechi Eze’s free-kick against Chelsea was disallowed because of wall encroachment.

The England star blasted Crystal Palace in front early on with the ball going through the hands of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

But VAR intervened because Marc Guehi was less than one metre from the Chelsea wall, with the defender deemed to have infringed.

The referee announced the reason behind the decision, saying: “After review, away number six is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken.

“Therefore, it’s an indirect free kick and a disallowed goal.”

Players are prohibited from encroaching on a defensive ball at the moment a free-kick is taken.

Law 13 on The FA‘s website states: “If, when a free kick is taken, an attacking team player is less than 1 m (1 yd) from a ‘wall’ formed by three or more defending team players, an indirect free kick is awarded.”

Sanchez’s blushes were spared as Eze’s rocket bypassed the wall and went straight through his hands.

The Palace celebrations were cut short and fans fumed over the decision.

SunSport’s very own referee Mark Halsey’s view

FORMER Premier League referee and SunSport whistleblower Mark Halsey gives his verdict on the decision to rule out Eberechi Eze’s free-kick…

LAW 13 on free kicks is that when you have a free kick, and the wall consists of three or more players, then the attacking players have to be at least a meter away from that wall.

We can clearly see that Marc Guehi wasn’t the required distance, as per Law 13.

You could also argue that he gave Moises Caicedo a little shove. I know it wasn’t mentioned but that little shove on Caicedo did create room for Eze’s shot to go through and beat the Chelsea goalkeeper.

VAR were correct to call referee Darren England across to have another look, but when you’re looking at that, you would like to think that Darren has picked that up in real time.

He should have seen that in real time, because he is in a great position. It was good that VAR came in and helped the match official out.

One reacted saying: “VAR is disgusting football is dead now.”

Another added: “Gameweek one and VAR ruining it already.”

A third wrote: “That’s a horrendous decision. Not a foul in any era of football. Hate VAR.”

And another commented: “1st weekend in and VAR and referees making mistakes. Never played the game and no understanding whatsoever. Guehi is stronger and has done nothing wrong there.”
