THE M25 has been closed in both directions due to an ongoing police incident.
Drivers have been warned they face severe delays along a stretch of the major motorway between Upminster and Aveley, in Essex.
Essex Police were called to an incident between J29 and J30 earlier this morning.
Emergency services including an ambulance and paramedics were stationed at the scene from just before 12pm.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M25 is CLOSED in both directions between J29 (Upminster) and J30 (Aveley) due to an Essex Police incident.
“Strategic diversion routes are in operation. If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.”
Clockwise traffic is being diverted via the hollow triangle symbol on road signs.
Motorists are advised to exit the M25 J29 on to the A127 and leave at the next roundabout by the fourth exit onto the A128.
They should follow the towards Orsett and at Orsett Cock roundabout take the fifth exit.
Then bear left onto the M25 and take the first exit at J30 roundabout to re-join the M25 towards Dartford Crossing.
Meanwhile anti-clockwise traffic is being diverted via the hollow square symbol on road signs.
Drivers are being told to exit on the slip roundabout and take the third exit onto the A13 towards Tilbury.
At the A128 bear left onto the exit slip and take first exit at Orsett Cock roundabout onto the A128 towards Brentwood.
And at Halfway House roundabout take the first exit onto the A127 towards London.
Follow this and take the exit slip towards M25 Junction 29.
Take the third exit at the roundabout to rejoin M25 towards Stanstead.
