Keane, 54, took his old contracts to a recording of The Overlap podcast with Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and former team-mate Gary Neville.

One of his contracts was shown to the camera as it revealed the interesting details that can go into a player’s deal.

Keane’s signing-on fee was split across the four-year contract, which would see him be paid £1million a year until it expired.

One clause that is stated meant that United would provide flights to him and his family between Manchester and Cork, Ireland.

It read: “The club will provide 20 return flights Manchester/Cork/Manchester for the use of the player, his partner and children for each year of this contract commencing from 1 July 2002.”

The contract also revealed the wording that allows players to feature for the national side.

Keane played 67 times for the Republic of Ireland during his career, scoring nine goals.

The clause stated: “The club shall release the player for National Representative matches for which he is selected in accordance with the principles of co-operation between Member Associations of Fifa and their clubs.”

The contract was not all in favour of the player though as Keane agreed to obligations to the club.

This included providing “reasonable assistance” for the club’s in-house media MUTV.

Ironically, it was an interview with MUTV, in which he ripped into his team-mates, that led to his exit from the club.

Another part of his contract stated he would have to be available for interviews and photoshoots “without limitation”.

Keane also agreed that United would be “entitled to use his name, nickname, signature, image, voice and film portrayal and other characteristics” in connection with selling merchandise.

Neville, 50, also allowed fans some insight into his final contract with United in terms of his pay.

He revealed that he was paid £2.3m for his final season before retiring in 2011.

Keane joined United from Nottingham Forest in 1993 after his move to Blackburn Rovers was hijacked.

He went on to make 480 appearances for the Red Devils and won seven Premier League titles and the Champions League in 1999.

But if he had opted to switch the City Ground for Ewood Park instead, his career could have panned out very differently.
