Organised by Matchroom and attracting the best pool players from around the globe, the US Open Pool Championship’s prize fund has grown significantly compared with previous years.
The winner of the 2025 event will receive $100,000 — doubling the champion’s prize from just a few years ago, showcasing the ever-growing popularity of pro pool.
Fedor Gorst, the 25-year-old reigning champion who defeated five-time winner Shane Van Boening 13-10 in 2024, will be defending his title.
Gorst told Sun Sport: “The pressure is always there. If there is no pressure I don’t feel like I am even trying. So pressure is good. To feel pressure is a privilege.
“A lot of it is mental. This sport, the difference between top players if you look at the top eight, skill-wise, the difference does not really matter, the mental side is where the difference is.
“I’ve been working with some technical people, working with ChatGPT as well.
“I give it a prompt, ‘You’re my mental coach, here’s how I feel, tell me how I can improve’.
“Honestly, I use ChatGPT for everything, for practice. I’m always taking notes, what I need to work on, my memory is not clean.
“There’s so many things I need to work on, and it’s only by going back to see what I was working on that has allowed me to improve.”
Nicknamed “The Ghost”, Gorst is the current nine-ball world No. 1 and has won four ranking event titles in his career so far, including two majors, per Matchroom Pool.
He made history in 2024 by becoming the first ever player to complete the ‘Grand Slam’ of World Pool Championship, World Pool Masters and US Open titles in the same calendar year.
