MERCEDES chief Toto Wolff has opened up about his love-hate relationship with former Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

Horner was dismissed by Red Bull last month, putting an end to his 20-year stint with the Formula One team.

Over the last decade, the Brit and Mercedes team principal Wolff had developed a rivalry off the track which eventually translated to the grid through their drivers.

Wolff has now revealed his thoughts on Horner‘s exit and what it could mean for the sport.

He told Formula.hu earlier this month: “What do I think? Well, he’s been acting like an a**hole quite often in the last 12-15 years.

“He operates on completely different values, but even your worst enemy has a best friend.

“On the other hand, he was hugely successful at what he did. Now that he’s gone, at least for a while, a real personality has left the sport.

“He was controversial and divisive, but he was one of the main characters here.

“You could safely say he was as significant as a great driver. If I look at it purely from an F1 perspective, I don’t think there are many old-style team boss dinosaurs left here.

“Maybe just me. Maybe Fred (Vasseur) is a bit of a dinosaur too.”

Asked about the nailbiting title race between then-Mercedes man Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull superstar Max Verstappen in 2021, which resulted in the Dutchman winning his first F1 crown in controversial circumstances, Wolff added: “If you look at it, it was always an interesting story.

“Those years, but especially 2021, it wasn’t just about Max and Lewis, it was about Christian and me. And sometimes it was really hard, it’s in every history book and it always will be.

“You know, he always said that I love to hate him. So who do I hate now? It seems like I have to find someone else…”

Both drivers are set to miss out on the title this year following an underwhelming start to the season.

Six months into his time at Ferrari, Hamilton finds himself sixth in the driver standings.

Meanwhile, Verstappen is third behind McLaren stars Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

F1 2025

THE new Formula One season is well underway – and one team appear to be running away with it.

A massive summer of change saw Lewis Hamilton move on from Mercedes and join Ferrari, while the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have a big chance to end Max Verstappen‘s recent dominance.

The Red Bull ace is aiming for a record-equalling FIFTH consecutive world title.
