Fleetwood, 34, also claimed the Fedex Cup and banked £7.4million after triumphing on US soil for the first time in his career at the season-ending event in Atlanta.

He carded a final-round 68 to finish on 18-under-par for the tournament – three shots clear of both Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley.

Ryder Cup team-mates Justin Rose and Shane Lowry greeted Fleetwood around a packed 18th green.

Emotional Fleetwood, who finished in the top four at all three FedEx Cup play-off events, said: “You just keep learning. This wasn’t the most comfortable I’ve been.

“I’ve had a great attitude. I was a bit erratic but I was really proud of how I found my swing on the 11th or 12th hole.

“When you’ve lost it so many times, a three-shot lead going down the last doesn’t seem that many.

“Whether I’ve won or not, I’ve been proud of my career.

“This doesn’t change that. Hopefully it’s the first of many to come. I’m so happy I’ve got it done.

“It makes me emotional. I’m so lucky with the support I get. I hope everybody knows how grateful we are.

“I said we will do it together. I’m so happy for me and everyone who supported me through all this.”

Defending champion Scottie Scheffler finished four shots back following a two-under 68.

Masters champ Rory McIlroy tied for 23rd after a level-par 70.
