Phil Kirk dead aged 59: Tributes pour in as Chesterfield owner passes away following brave cancer battle

CHESTERFIELD owner Phil Kirk has died aged 59.

The League Two club chief was tragically diagnosed with inoperable cancer earlier this year.

A short statement on the Spireites’ website read: “It is with great sadness that we announce that the club’s owner, Phil Kirk, has died at the age of 59, following a short illness.

“Our thoughts are with Phil’s family and friends.”

Kirk invested in Chesterfield alongside his brother Ashley in 2022.

The pair pumped more than £1million into the club, which has since returned to the EFL having previously been stuck in the National League since 2018.

Explaining why he invested in the club, local hero Kirk said: “Why would we do it? Because it’s Chesterfield.

“There is no other club, obviously, that we would have done this for.”

Several EFL clubs have offered words of condolence to Chesterfield.

While plenty of fans have also paid tribute.

One wrote on social media: “A true legend, gone too soon.”

And a second commented: “RIP Phil very sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

A third posted: “So sad. Thoughts with his family and friends.”

While talkSPORT reporter Alan Biggs added: “A man who who will never be forgotten for his immense legacy to a town & its football team.

“Also for being a shining example of ownership in the football industry. Thoughts with Phil’s family, friends & all at the club.”
