A HUGE fire has broken out at a scrap metal yard with flames and thick smoke billowing across the city skyline.
Locals have also been warned to keep indoors, close windows and not drink water from their taps.
Police and fire crews attended the scene following calls earlier this afternoon
Emergency services raced to the scene of the Leicester recycling and scrap metal site earlier this afternoon.
Plumes of smoke can be seen for miles, with drivers being urged to find alternative routes and residents told to stay inside.
Leicestershire Police have said: “Due to the fire on Ulverscroft Road, Leicester, residents in the area are to be aware not to drink the water from taps.”
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Services deployed eight fire engines, along with several specialist appliances to tackle the blaze on Ulverscroft Road.
Ulverscroft Road in Leicester has been closed between the junctions of Catherine Street and Forest Road due to the fire.
The local Fire Control have also reported receiving multiple calls in regards to the large smoke plume that can be seen across the city.
