After attempting to massage the woman, he sexually assaulted her before fleeing on foot.

Police have released a description of the man, who is said to have been white but tanned.

They added that he was aged in his mid-30s, was of a stocky build and had a full, dark-brown beard.

The forced added that he had crooked teeth and spoke with a foreign accent.

It is not believed that the man was wearing a top.

Detective Inspector Steve Shimmons said: “Specialist officers have engaged with the victim, who continues to be supported as we seek to establish exactly what happened.

“The beach was extremely busy on Bank Holiday Monday and we’re urging anyone who saw what happened, or anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity or captured it on camera, to contact us.”

Police said that anyone with information can report it online or call 101, quoting crime reference 47250168587.

The assault took place on the bank holiday Monday, which saw thousands of Brits flocking to beaches across the country.

Sunseekers were spotted at beaches in Brighton, Bournemouth and Southend as temperatures soared.

In London, temperatures reached 27C while rocketing to 29C in Wales.

Both Wales and Northern Ireland recorded their hottest bank holiday ever on Monday.

However, the Met Office has predicted that the warm weather will likely come to an end after the bank holiday.

The remnants of Hurricane Erin will bring rain towards the end of the week, with parts of the UK set to be “stuck under clouds”.
