The road has been closed between J7 (Netherpool Road) and J6 (Hooton).

All emergency services are attending the scene, including ambulance and air ambulances.

Massive queues have started forming, with congestion stretching all the way back to the M56 interchange on the northbound side.

Meanwhile, the queues have been spotted reaching J5 on the southbound side.

Although the southbound route has been reopened, drivers have been told to expect delays to continue as the backlog clears.

The news comes after carnage unfolded on Britain’s roads over the bank holiday weekend.

A lorry fire on the A14 forced emergency services to close the road, after the vehicle became “engulfed” in flames on Monday.

Six fire engines – five from Cambridge and one from Suffolk – raced to the scene to bring the blaze under control.

Fifty tonnes of hay caught alight, causing the road to grind to a halt.

Meanwhile, the M62 was shut after a crash near J23.

Motorists were spotted getting out of their cars, as delays on the westbound route stretched into the afternoon.

The crash had taken place at 3pm, though the route was eventually reopened at 3.45pm – after the vehicle was moved onto the hard shoulder.

Also on Monday, a woman was killed in a car crash in Pilning, South Gloucestershire at 8am.

The motorcyclist was killed after colliding with another vehicle.

Now, police are appealing for more information about the incident.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “A motorcyclist has died in a road traffic collision in South Gloucestershire.

“Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the A403 Severn Road, near Pilning, after a collision between a car and a motorbike at about 8.30am this morning (Monday 25 August).

“The motorcyclist – a woman in her 20s – sadly died at the scene. Their next of kin has been informed and a specially-trained officer will be providing them with support. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them.”

The spokesperson added: “The car driver was physically unharmed and has been assisting our enquiries.”
