Ruben Amorim‘s side had to fight back from 2-0 down to force penalties against Grimsby at Blundell Park.
But they were not able to salvage any shred of dignity as they were bested in the shootout 12-11.
The result saw Mariners supporters storm the pitch in celebration while fans up and down the country cheered on the underdogs.
While 150 miles across England, Everton and Mansfield fans banded together to watch the shootout outside of the Bramley Moore Hotel in Liverpool.
They had been watching the Toffees win 2-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium to progress to the third round beforehand.
But after their game, they all joined together to cheer on the Mariners in the tense shootout.
A video was shared on social media of hundreds of fans huddled together watching the spotkicks on Tv through a window.
Large cheers broke out as Bryan Mbeumo‘s second penalty of the shootout crashed against the bar, leading to United’s demise.

They then started chanting anti-Manchester songs together as they headed on their way.
Many of them appeared thrilled with the result for Grimsby, even though the Mariners’ own goalkeeper admitted he was left “half fuming”.
Christy Pym revealed after the game that he was a United fan and could not help but be a bit upset at the result.
But for his team-mate and goalscorer Tyrell Warren the victory was even sweeter.
He had spent his youth on the books of United playing alongside Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay.
However, he was released in 2019 and has rebuilt his career in the English Football League.

It was arguably United’s biggest upset since the 1995/96 season when they were beaten by York City.
The Minstermen beat Sir Alex Ferguson‘s team, which consisted of the likes of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Lee Sharpe.
York romped to a 3-0 win at Old Trafford thanks to two goals from Harvey Barnes‘ dad Paul and one from Tony Barras.
United fans, however, had plenty of concerns being raised as they watched on at the horror show.
Many believe there were “red flags” from £74million striker Benjamin Sesko as he took United’s TENTH penalty in the shootout.
The Slovenian’s transfer fee this summer equates to THIRTEEN YEARS of turnover for Grimsby Town.
While many others demanded Amorim be sacked after he was spotted fiddling with a tactics board.
Gimsby have been rewarded with another big game in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
