RUBEN AMORIM has been brutally mocked by fans on social media following Manchester United’s League Cup giant-killing at the hands of Grimsby.

The Red Devils turned out to be the big catch of the round as the Mariners caught a spot in round three after beating United in a penalty shootout 12-11.

However, when United were trailing at 2-0 in the 62nd minute, TV cameras switched focus away from the rain-soaked pitch and onto Amorim in his dugout.

The 40-year-old was seen with a laminated tactics board and moving around magnetic pieces to indicate a new formation for the team.

But the image of the board paired with the nature of the occasion, with United 2-0 down to a club 58 places below them in the English football pyramid, left many fans in stitches.

And some quick-thinking fans even made mock-up images of Amorim on his tactics board doing other things.

One photoshopped image had Amorim playing with an Etch A Sketch board.

A second showed him playing popular board games like Guess Who and Operation.

Another saw Amorim sorting out a binder full of Pokémon cards.

A fourth had the former Sporting Lisbon boss without his board, holding a pair of knitting needles as he made a red, green, and yellow scarf instead.

Some fans blasted the sight of the board, with one saying the Portuguese was “pretending to look busy at work”.

After the board-watch, United did go on to score two goals through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, though it ultimately counted for nothing as they crashed out after Mbeumo’s missed kick in the shootout.

Amorim was unable to watch from the sidelines during the tense shootout, with one disgruntled fan labelling him a “coward”.

And Amorim made his anger at the result known following the game.

He told Sky Sports: “In the end, it doesn’t matter if we recover or not, it’s the signs the team gave during the game, the beginning of the game.

“I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.

Man Utd ratings v Grimsby

MANCHESTER UNITED are at rock bottom after the biggest cup upset saw the club crash out of the Carabao Cup second-round to League Two Grimsby Town on penalties.

Ruben Amorim’s United lost to a four-tier side for the first time ever.

The home fans sang “you’re getting sacked in the morning” to Amorim throughout and you can’t help but wonder if they’re right.

Here’s how SunSport’s Katherine Walsh rated United’s flops at Blundell Park.

“The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it. We lost, the best team won…

“I think it’s really clear what they spoke, so let’s move on from this day and I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.

“The way we start the game without any intensity, all the idea of the pressure, we were completely lost and that’s why I think they spoke really loud.”

Amorim also issued an apology to fans, saying: “When you lose but see something new, it’s different. When you see something like today, it’s hard to talk about that.

“I just want to say I’m really sorry for the fans. The support they gave me, with all the support they help the team. I have nothing to say. I’m really sorry.”

United face Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday before the international break.
