DANNY MURPHY has insisted there is “no chance” he would ever want to play under Ruben Amorim.

The nine-times-capped England star slammed the Manchester United manager’s tactics following their penalty shootout exit from the second round of the League Cup to Grimsby.

That misery compounded a thus-far winless start to the Premier League for Amorim’s flops, which also followed a record-low campaign of finishing 15th in the league last season and a defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

Those results have all come with Amorim sticking to his guns in a 3-4-3 system.

And ex-Liverpool star Murphy has slammed those tactics, claiming he wouldn’t like to play in that midfield.

He told talkSPORT’s White and Jordan: “I think that squad is able to compete. I just think his system is the problem, I’ve said it from day one.

The 48-year-old then added: “I wouldn’t like playing that system as a midfielder, no chance.”

However, Murphy did admit that he couldn’t help but like Amorim for his charisma, but that ultimately, every one of United’s midfielders had regressed under him.

He explained: “He’s warm and charismatic – you can’t help but like him. [But] From a footballing perspective, that system – it’s not going to work.

“What midfielder at Manchester United has progressed in that system under him? They’ve all digressed.

“Every one of them has been hammered – and the reason is because if you play two in the middle of the park in any system, whether it be a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, if you’ve only got two in the middle, you’re going to get overrun and look troubled.”

Amorim flooded his team full of midfielders against Grimsby, but left former Man Utd star Phil Jones confused by the baffling decision to deploy Mason Mount as a left wing-back, rather than as a midfielder.

Jones told Sky Sports: “When he changed and put Mason Mount in that position, they still went with a back five, but they were building with a back five against Grimsby, who were sitting on the edge of the box.

“Your spare man was almost in build-up when you needed that spare man sort of further higher up the pitch to make an overload out wide or through the middle.”

Those thoughts were echoed by fellow pundit Jordi McAnuff, who added: “How many times was that spare man De Ligt, for example, in that build-up?

“He’d be the one joining in, and with the greatest respect to him, he should have an attacking player getting into the box, where a lot of the time it was a defender, an extra man.

“It just seems crazy that he’s so wedded to this formation, at all costs and at any circumstance in a match.

“He’s almost forcing people into positions, whatever the state of the game is, it just seems absolutely baffling to me, that there’s just no flex at all, and I just feel that that is definitely something.

“Yes, application, understanding of what the game was about.

“I thought they were miles off it in that first half in particular, as if they rolled up today and just had no idea of what’s going to be expected at Grimsby Town away on a wet Wednesday night.”

United face Burnley in the league next, with the pressure piling on even higher on Amorim after bookies slashed odds on his head to be on the chopping board before the first international break of the season has even hit.
