FORMULA ONE star Lando Norris sent a shock message of support to under-fire Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

The McLaren ace, 25, posted a public statement on his Instagram 24 hours after United’s pitiful defeat to League Two side Grimsby in the Carabao Cup.

While he has never publicly stated his support for the team, Norris was spotted wearing a United shirt during a tennis match against fellow F1 drivers in April.

But the Brit has now seemingly let the cat out of the bag with a statement of encouragement to Amorim, who is set for crunch talks about his future next week.

Norris wrote on his Instagram story late on Thursday night: “Really I just wanna see the whole team happy and smiling and see Amorim do well. That’s all I really want .”

One user joked that it might have been a bet with his pal Angry Ginge who is a well-known United fan from Salford, Manchester.

Amorim looked like a broken man after his side were dumped out of the second round of the cup after losing 12-11 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw.

Charles Vernam and Carrington youth product Tyrell Warren put Grimsby into a deserved half-time lead, with the visitors fortunate to take the game to penalties as Harry Maguire’s header followed up Bryan Mbeumo’s strike to make it 2-2.

Mbeumo missed the 26th penalty of a marathon 18-minute shootout to send the fourth tier side into the history books.

The pressure was already building on Amorim after failing to win either of their first two Premier League games and now, without European football, their chances of silverware this season have suffered a huge blow.

Norris must have been watching the historic match from Amsterdam while preparing for the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend as F1 resumes after a summer break.

He trails team-mate Oscar Piastri by nine points heading into this Sunday’s race with no other driver realistically in the fight with 10 races remaining.

Norris deleted his Instagram story within an hour of posting it.
