Jockey for massive 5-1 St Leger candidate Lazy Griff revealed as Charlie Johnston prepares for the big day

CHARLIE JOHNSTON has called on ‘Super Soumi’ to get the job done at Donny.

Belgian ace Christophe Soumillon rode Lazy Griff to finish second in the Derby and he’ll aim to go one place better in the Betfred St Leger on September 13.

The classy colt, who is a 5-1 shot for the Leger with the sponsors, has chased home Lambourn at Epsom and the Curragh the last twice, but his trainer has been gagging to step him up to a mile and three quarters.

And the horse will do so with the 10-time champion jockey of France on his back, as William Buick, who rode Lazy Griff in the Irish Derby, is set to be at Leopardstown to ride Ombudsman on St Leger day.

Soumillon, 44, has ridden the three-year-old twice in his career and arguably helped him produce two career bests, winning a Group 3 in France before his runner-up effort at Epsom in June.

Johnston said: “Christophe is an excellent and very experienced jockey, he’s won on the horse and knows him well.

“Lambourn has beaten us three times this year but we were only three lengths behind him at the Curragh and three and a bit lengths behind him at Epsom.

“Over the longer distance there are definitely reasons to be hopeful that we can turn the tables on him, as we have always felt the trip at Doncaster will really suit him.

“Any rain between now and Leger day would be very welcome, the more the merrier to be honest.

“We will get him to Doncaster in as good a shape as we can, then it will be over to him.”
