CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN has swapped Manchester for Malmo – after linking up to train with the Swedish champions.

The Denmark international is a free agent after his Old Trafford contract expired in June.

And Eriksen, 33, joined Allsvenskan title holders Malmo for training on Thursday morning.

The former Tottenham and Brentford playmaker attracted interest from Burnley and Fenerbahce during the summer, but no deal was done.

He has now joined up with pal Anders Christiansen at Malmo. Both players have undergone heart problems recently.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on national duty in June 2021, and was out of action for seven months.

Malmo sporting director Daniel Andersson said: “Christian is a good player, and a nice guy. We want to have a good level in our training sessions.

“And he can certainly help with that, to be an inspiration. He asked “AC” [Christiansen] if it would be OK for him to join us.

“We won’t train from Friday to Sunday, but if he is involved with us next week it won’t do any harm.

“He is obviously a good player, so it’s not like he will ruin anything – in fact quite the contrary.”

Eriksen would not be eligible to play for Malmo this season, following the closure of the Allsvenskan registration window on August 31st and the team’s prior submission of their full Europa League squad.

Exceptions can be made to the league’s registration rules, and Malmo could investigate them if they wanted to try to offer the Denmark legend a contract, but the club have so far not indicated a plan for a long-term relationship with Eriksen.

Andersson added: “Our window is now closed, and I’ve not yet thought about how he could fit in with us.

“Right now we are helping him, and it is a fun and inspiring thing for our players.”

Eriksen said in June that he was unlikely to continue his career in the Premier League after spending over 10 years in England.

Malmo are currently fourth in Sweden‘s top flight, 15 points behind leaders Mjallby.
