Rocco Redley, five, was hit in the face as his family tried to flee.

His mother Emma, 40, told MailOnline: “Rocco wasn’t majorly physically injured in the end, but he was terrified.

“It’s the first display I’ve ever taken him to and he’s told me now he never wants to see a firework again.

“I keep reliving the moment, it was terrifying. I see it back in slow motion but it all happened so fast.

“The worst thing is thinking that it could have been so much worse.”

It is understood around six people were affected as surrounding families and onlookers scattered.

One reveller told StokeonTrentLive: “A firework went off into the crowd and a load of people ran away.

“I heard an announcement made that they were asking for a first aider and I was told that six people were hit by fireworks.

“The fireworks later resumed.”

A terrified dad attending the disastrous display also claimed: “It hit the family standing right beside us.

“We felt the heat as it came into us. My son’s hood is singed.”

While a mum-of-two alleged the rocket misfired so close to her she was forced to “throw” her horrified daughter out of firing line.

“We left after it happened, hope everyone else was okay.”

“One firework took off across the grass and exploded in front of a warden and then two or three fireworks followed across the grass and exploded into the crowd,” reported another shocked witness.

They added: “It was dangerous so we left immediately.”
