A SLICE of Sir Mark Prescott is always fun and there’s every chance the third Baronet could take centre stage today as the St Leger meeting kicks off at Doncaster.
The Heath House maestro unleashes Moon Target, Consent and Immediate Effect in front of the ITV cameras, and all three will be fancied by many.
PACrafty Sir Mark could have an ace or two up his sleeve on day one of the St Leger festival from Doncaster[/caption]
MOON TARGET (2.25) tackles the Group 2 Betfred May Hill Stakes for juvenile fillies, and is a race that has thrown up Classic winners like Midway Lady, Reams of Verse and this year’s 1,000 Guineas heroine Desert Flower.
Prescott was second previously with Flawless way back in 1997.
Consent is another of the fairer sex and goes in the Group 2 Betfred Park Hill.
That has been landed by classy types in St Leger victor Simple Verse and Gold Cup winner Estimate.
Meanwhile, Immediate Effect (3.35) struts his stuff in the Oddschecker Handicap over a mile and a quarter.
Moon Target could easily land the May Hill, having chased home the very promising Ballydoyle filly Precise in the Prestige Stakes at Goodwood last time.
However, back in third that day was AYLIN (2.25) and I’m not sure we saw the best of her.
They are miles apart in the betting today which suggests to me the Karl Burke runner is a massive price and a decent each-way bet.
The daughter of St Mark’s Basilica got outpaced down the hill on that last run but kept on nicely in the final furlong.
That was over 7f and this extra furlong should suit well.
I’m with Prescott in the Park Hill, which I’m sure will delight Sir Mark no end.
Santorini Star is improving but I can’t help but feel CONSENT (3.00) has been gagging for this trip under Luke Morris.
The Denford Stud inmate is a daughter of Lope de Vega who cost 260,000 euros.
She’s only had four runs and was beaten in a Group 3 at Deauville last time when sent off favourite.
That was quite a competitive race, though, and she was staying on really well over the mile and a half.
This staying trip could be the making of her.
As for the 1m2f handicap, well I’ll be supporting CASTLE STUART (3.35) who was a real eye-catcher at York last time and might be able to go a couple of places better.
A winner off 7lb lower on his final start for Karl Burke, he was making his debut for Richard Fahey having been purchased for 165,000gns and having been keen and wide throughout he flew home to desk-heat for third.
He’s just a lb for that but clearly a talented horse who could be ahead of the handicapper. Barry McHugh has the ride.
The ITV coverage starts nice and early and they are showing the juveniles fillies’ handicap over an extended 6f.
HALF SOVEREIGN (1.15) might blow this field away as she stays well and is improving all the time.
She has experience in these types of races for Burke having scored off 80 at Newmarket last time and she’s only up 4lb here.
She’s down in trip, but I can’t see that as a real problem. Clifford Lee takes the ride.
There’s one other race on ITV in a valuable sales event again over an extended 6f.
It’s hard to believe Tadej is worth a rating of 106 and he ran well below that at York when the jockey said he ran ‘flat’.
Off 8st 8lb the one that is interesting is JEL PEPPER (1.50), who goes for Oliver Cole and Finley Marsh.
A winner at Goodwood on debut, the gelding was then a fine third in a Group 2 at Newmarket before finishing fourth in a big field sales contest like this at Naas.
Good luck and Yeeehaaa!
