CHELSEA’S squad suits Ruben Amorim better than Manchester United’s, former Arsenal ace Paul Merson has claimed.

Amorim lost his 20th match as United boss on Sunday in the Manchester derby – his 16th defeat in the Premier League from just 31 matches.

The result leaves United in the bottom half of the table, with Chelsea unbeaten after four matches.

The Blues were one of many clubs to have seriously looked at Amorim over the past few years and Merson believes things would have worked out for him at Stamford Bridge.

The pundit told Sky Sports: “Ruben Amorim, the way he wants to play, is a worry.

“He won’t change. He’ll look at it and say ‘I’ve got where I am today by playing the way I play’, using three at the back and high wing-backs.

“He would have been a perfect fit for Chelsea. They’ve got world class wing-backs in Reece James and Malo Gusto.

“They’ve got the best holding midfield player in the league in Moises Caicedo. It would fit the players.

“You look at Man Utd and this system does not suit the squad they’ve got at all. The two wing-backs are nowhere near good enough.

“And they are a big part of this formation working. No legs in midfield. Everything is up against him.”

Amorim has regularly been criticised for his use of the United squad, fitting them into his preferred 3-4-3 formation.

After the heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, Amorim has once more been blasted for his tactical decisions.

United legend Paul Scholes, speaking on The Good the Bad and the Football podcast, said: “You talk about his philosophy, his style of play, the way he wants to play…

“There’s so many clever coaches in England and around the world, they work it out quite easily. They know exactly how United are going to play every week.

“When the team sheet comes through an hour before the game you always wonder how your opponents are going to play, five at the back, four at the back?

“With Amorim, you know, everybody knows. It’s easy to play against and easy to work out as the coaches are that clever. Anyone in the Premier League can beat us.”

Amorim now has the worst win percentage of any United manager since World War II.

United also rank bottom of the league for ever-present teams since his appointment in November 2024.
