Unhappy at having been pushed over, Reinildo kicked out towards Cash’s private parts.

Referee Sam Barrott spotted the offence and sent the Mozambique international off.

The decision was checked and upheld by VAR, “with the contact on Cash deemed to be a clear violent action with his studs”.

After much dissent, Reinildo finally trudged down the tunnel.

The left-back signed for Sunderland from Atletico Madrid during the summer.

Prior to his red card, Reinildo had played every minute in the Premier League for the Black Cats so far this season.

The sending off forced Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris into an early reshuffle.

Chris Rigg was substituted in just the 37th minute in order to get an extra defender in Dan Ballard on.

The incident will have maddened Le Bris, particularly with Reinildo possessing so much top level experience.

He has played in 25 Champions League matches across stints with Lille and Atletico Madrid.

Reinildo was never sent off in 103 appearances for Atletico, although he was booked 23 times.

However, he was sent off on the opening day of the 2020-21 campaign while playing for Lille for an awful challenge on then-Rennes star Raphinha.

The score was level at 0-0 when Reinildo was dismissed.

Le Bris’ 10-men managed to get into the interval with the score still tied.
