Emergency crews raced to the scene on the northbound carriageway where the M77 merges with the M8.

The alarm was raised after police received reports of a crash involving a tractor and trailer.

The crash caused a huge load of timber to be spilt across several lanes of both motorways after the vehicle fell from the bridge.

When officers arrived at the scene, the driver of the tractor, a 61-year-old man, was found injured.

He was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured as a result of the crash.

Cops locked down the road for around twelve hours to allow collision investigators to conduct inquiries at the scene.

It was reopened again this morning at around 5.25am.

Police have now launched an investigation into the fatal crash and have said that inquiries are ongoing.

And they are appealing to anyone with information about the smash to come forward.

Officers believe that the man may have taken ill while he was behind the wheel.

Any motorists who were in the area and have dashcam footage have also been urged to speak with officers.

Sergeant Fraser McEwan said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash, however, one line of enquiry is that the driver took ill within the tractor.

“A number of road closures had to be put in place following this crash to allow for an investigation to take place and the load to be recovered.

“All roads were reopened at 5.25am this morning.

“We would ask anyone who witnessed this crash and has yet to speak with police to please contact us.

“Anyone with relevant dash-cam footage is also asked to come forward.

“If you can help, please contact police on 101 quoting incident number 2508 of 30 September.”
