MET Police boss Sir Mark Rowley last night condemned the behaviour of officers secretly recorded making vile remarks as “reprehensible.”

An undercover BBC reporter filmed cops and staff at Britain’s busiest police station making Islamophobic and misogynistic remarks.

They also bragged of using excessive force against prisoners in custody and one voiced support for far right activist Tommy Robinson.

The bombshell recordings were made by a journalist who got a job as a civilian detention worker in the custody suite at Charing Cross police station and were broadcast on Panorama last night.

Horrified Met commissioner Sir Mark said: “The behaviour depicted in this programme is reprehensible and completely unacceptable.”

He added that officers “behaving in such appalling, criminal ways, let down our communities”.

Sir Mark apologised on behalf of the force, saying officers’ conduct “will cause some to question if their sons and daughters are safe in our cells, and whether they would be believed and respected as victims of crime.

“For that, I am truly sorry.”

Nine officers have been suspended over the scandal and the Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating 11 people for potential gross misconduct.

One of them, a Pc, is also under criminal investigation on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

Sir Mark said disciplinary hearings will be held within weeks for anyone “where there is incontrovertible evidence of racism, misogyny, anti-Muslim sentiment or bragging about excessive use of force.”

The BBC reporter recorded officers and staff while socialising after work between August 2024 and January this year.

A similar scandal at the same police station led to former commissioner Dame Cressida Dick being ousted by London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan in 2022.

The Met later promised it would “drive forward lasting change”.
