Emergency crews rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised around 5.30pm.

But tragically, Mr Meikle, from Carnwath, Lanarkshire, could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The lorry had shed a load of timber over the M77 and M8 eastbound and westbound carriageways below.

Police are continuing to carry out enquiries into the circumstances behind fatal smash.

There is a likelihood that Mr Meikle became unwell while driving the vehicle.

The M77 flyover and M8 westbound were closed last night as officers carried out investigations.

The busy routes were reopened to motorists at 5.25am this morning.

Police are appealing to the public for help with their enquiries and have urged any witnesses or drivers with dash-cam footage to get in touch.

Sergeant Fraser McEwan said: “Our thoughts are with Mr Meikle’s family and friends at this time. Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash, however, one line of enquiry is that Tom took ill within the tractor.

“A number of road closures had to be put in place following this crash to allow for an investigation to take place and the load to be recovered. All roads were reopened at 5.25am this morning.

“We would ask anyone who witnessed this crash and has yet to speak with police to please contact us. Anyone with relevant dash-cam footage is also asked to come forward.

“If you can help, please contact police on 101 quoting incident number 2508 of 30 September.”
