DRIVERS are facing huge rush-hour queues and delays on the M6 and M62 with a crash grinding traffic to a halt.

The collision has closed one lane of traffic on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 near Junction 11 at Birchwood, near Warrington, Cheshire.

The crash has also caused delays tailing back to Junction 8 at Burtonwood.

National Highways said motorists should expect a 30-minute delay on the M62 with normal conditions to resume later this morning.

There are also queues on the A57 and A580 between the M6 and Greater Manchester.

Congestion has also been building on the M6 southbound approaching Junction 21A for the M62 with queues reaching back to Junction 22 at Winwick.

While the M6 northbound has been closed completely in Cumbria.

The National Highways said this morning: “The M6 in Cumbria is closed northbound between Junction 44 (Carlisle) and Junction 45 (near Gretna) following a colission on the A74M.

“A serious collision has occured just after J45 where the road becomes the A74(M) within Traffic Scotland’s jurisdiction.

“National Highways have closed the M6 to assist the emergency responders attending to this incident.”

Drivers have been urged to follow the “Solid Circles” diversion symbols on road signs.

They are advised to exit Junction 44 at the Greymoorhill Interchange and take the third exit onto the A7 northbound towards Longtown.

After leaving Longtown, drivers should turn left onto A6071 and at Guardsmill Interchange to follow Traffic Scotlands diversion route.
