SIR ALEX FERGUSON’S exit from Manchester United in 2013 cost the club more than £2million – despite him retiring from management.

The legendary Scot ended his incredible 26-year reign at Old Trafford more than a decade ago after winning 13 Premier League titles.

He also lifted nine domestic trophies and two Champions League titles as he became the most successful manager in the club’s history.

Ferguson hand-picked his own successor in David Moyes after calling time on his trophy-laden managerial career.

But United were forced to splash out £2.4m compensating Ferguson’s long-serving staff who were not wanted by Moyes.

Moyes would go on to oversee a disastrous start to life at United as his six-year deal was scrapped after just ten months in charge.

United then had to cough up £5.2m paying off the current Everton boss and his staff.

The club continued to struggle on the pitch in the aftermath of Ferguson’s retirement after coughing up an incredible £70m on future sackings.

Louis van Gaal‘s dismissal in 2016 led to an £8.4m payout, while Jose Mourinho was paid an eye-watering £19.6m in 2018 after being axed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer collected £9.1m after being fired in 2021 and Erik ten Hag‘s sacking last year put United £10.4m out of pocket.

That brings United’s total bill for sacking managers to a staggering £69.8m since Ferguson retired.

And if current boss Ruben Amorim is given the chop before his first anniversary in November, that will add a whopping £12m to the total.

The Portuguese boss remains under huge pressure this season after overseeing just two wins in six games.

His side lost 3-1 to Brentford last weekend and have already suffered an embarrassing cup exit to League Two side Grimsby this season.

Amorim’s hopes of turning a new page following a disastrous 2024-25 campaign that saw United finish 15th have been dashed.

SunSport understands he still retains the club’s backing, but United are keeping an eye on potential replacements amid their poor run of form.

Three Premier League bosses – Oliver Glasner, Fabian Hurzeler and Andoni Iraola – are all under consideration.

United legend Michael Carrick is also in the frame as a potential caretaker option.

Amorim signed a two-and-a-half-year deal worth around £6.5m per season last year after joining from Sporting Lisbon.

But he has failed to arrest their slump since replacing Ten Hag and sources have admitted that morale is low following the team’s latest loss to the Bees – their third reverse of the season already.

United’s next game is a must-win home game against newly-promoted Sunderland on Saturday before travelling to Premier League champions Liverpool after the international break.
