Ms Badenoch has pledged to remove legally binding carbon targets and the target of Net Zero emissions by 2050 — brought in when Baroness May was PM in 2019.

The Tory peer said: “I am deeply disappointed by this retrograde step which upends 17 years of consensus between our main political parties and the scientific community.

“To row back now would be a catastrophic mistake.

“The science remains the same.

“The harms are undeniable.”

Ms Badenoch said last night: “The plan for Net Zero is not working.”

Meanwhile, former Environment Minister Lord Deben said Margaret Thatcher would have been “appalled” by the decision to scrap the climate act.

He added that repealing the law would be bad for the economy insisting that she would have wanted to invest in the new industries.
