RUBEN AMORIM has singled out a strange choice for what the missing piece is at Manchester United.

The Portuguese boss is off to a nightmare start to the season, sitting 14th in the Premier League table after six games, as well as suffering an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to League Two outfit Grimsby Town in August.

But now Amorim has said that what United need are not just leaders, but more mavericks on the pitch to change the game when things go south in games, as they have been like to do so far this campaign.

He told Owen Hargreaves for TNT Sport: “We need leaders, but sometimes what I am thinking is we need some crazy guys.

[Matheus] Cunha is a little bit like that, he’s a guy that is a good guy, but he doesn’t care who you are. Whenever he is there in that position, ‘I will go with the ball’.

“This kind of feeling, we need that. Because [Harry] Maguire was captain, and played for the national team, but you can feel it sometimes when things are going wrong, we go down.

“No matter if it’s Bruno [Fernandes] with the experience or Harry, and that is in the past, so we need to live in the future.

“Sometimes you look at the pitch, something is going really wrong, and you see Bryan [Mbeumo] with a different light, because he came from a different environment.

“And then you look at Cunha and you feel that sometimes he is frustrated, but you can feel that frustration is something like ‘give me the ball’, so we miss that.

“We need to forget the past and we need sometimes that crazy guy, ‘it doesn’t matter that the world can be on fire, but I don’t care’. Sometimes it’s not just the leader, but it’s those maverick guys that we need in the team.”

Amorim singled out two of the three big-money attackers that the Red Devils splashed out on during the summer transfer window in Mbeumo and Cunha, but despite his comments, it has been difficult for the pair to make an impact since their arrival.

Cunha is yet to notch a goal contribution in red this season, while Mbeumo has tapped home just one league goal this season to accompany his League Cup equaliser against Grimsby Town.

Fellow new arrival Benjamin Sesko has also only scored once, after having three bites at a loose ball in the box during his side’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the weekend.

And things aren’t due to get any easier for the struggling giants, as they host a high-flying Sunderland side on Saturday before making the trip to league leaders Liverpool after the international break.

Amorim is already under significant pressure, and it is hard to imagine how much longer he could remain in the hotseat in the North West should results not improve.

United have reportedly considered some potential replacements for the 40-year-old already, with Prem names like Oliver Glasner, Fabian Hurzeler and Andoni Iraola among those the club have looked at.

Former United hero and Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick has also been touted by some as a stop-gap option should the club require an interim while making their pick for a new figure at the helm.
