Man Utd vs Sunderland preview
Here we go again…
Manchester United find themselves in a familiar situation as high-flying Sunderland visit Old Trafford for Saturday’s Premier League encounter.
For the umpteenth time over the last decade, Saturday’s clash is a must-win for an underperforming side with another manager on the brink of being relieved of his duties.
Rinse and repeat…
Following victory over Chelsea, the Red Devils slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Brentford, leaving them 14th in the division with just two wins from six matches.
United are off to their worst start to a Premier League season in 33 years, while Ruben Amorim is now the odds-on favourite to get the axe.
And of course, the two-week international break will only heighten the speculation should Sunderland get a result.
That would indeed be a huge surprise on paper, given United’s record against Saturday’s opponents.
They’ve lost just two of their last 30 league games against Sunderland (W22 D6), while United are also unbeaten in their last 24 Premier League games against newly promoted sides (W21 D3).
But these are different times, and the Black Cats might just fancy their chances of causing an upset in front of what will likely be a nervous Old Trafford faithful.
Sunderland have started the season in fantastic style. Their 11 points from six Premier League matches is the best start by a newly promoted side since West Ham in 2012–13.
This is Sunderland’s 17th season in the Premier League, but the first in which they’ve reached a double-figure points tally after six games, thanks to three wins and two draws from their opening fixtures.

Double chance – Sunderland
Although Manchester United boast an excellent record against promoted sides and have won their last two on home turf – it’s tough to make a case for backing them at odds-on 1/2.
Their two wins they have managed are hardly cause for celebration – a stoppage-time penalty was needed to scrape past promoted Burnley at home, while their narrow win over Chelsea came against a side reduced to ten men in the fifth minute.
Instead, we’re opting for the visitors to come away from Old Trafford with at least a point, priced at 6/4 for the double chance.
Regis Le Bris’ side will be buoyed by last week’s away win over Europa League Nottingham Forest, while a goalless draw away to Crystal Palace is nothing to sniff at.
