LEWIS HAMILTON took a playful swipe at Formula One rival Fernando Alonso after his explicit rant at the Singapore Grand Prix.

F1 veteran Alonso had raged down the Aston Martin team radio after Hamilton repeatedly drove off track at the Marina Bay Street Circuit as he tried to manage a critical brake problem.

Hamilton, 40, had been jostling with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli for P5 just two laps from the end of the race when his front-left brakes failed him.

He was forced to limp home in the final two laps of the race, seeing a gap from Alonso reduce from over 40 seconds to just four-tenths by the time they crossed the line.

Alonso, 44, had seen his former McLaren team-mate and championship rival cutting several corners in a desperate attempt to stay ahead.

And the Spaniard was heard raging down the radio, blasting: “I cannot f****** believe it. I mean, I cannot f****** believe it. I cannot f****** believe it. Is it safe to drive with no brakes?

“For me, you cannot drive when the car is unsafe. Sometimes they try to disqualify me with no mirror, and now you have no brakes and everything is fine? I doubt it.”

Hamilton was ultimately summoned to the stewards after the race and hit with a five-second time penalty, which demoted him to eighth behind Alonso.

However, the day after the race, Hamilton took a swipe at Alonso for his X-rated post-race rant on his Instagram story.

The seven-time world champion shared a compilation of British comedy One Foot in the Grave, in which the main character Victor Meldrew, played by Richard Wilson, famously had the catchphrase: “I don’t believe it!”

Hamilton captioned his post: “18 years of…”

And while the post didn’t explicitly mention Alonso, it was clearly a dig at his rival.

This was likely a reference to Hamilton’s rookie season in the sport in 2007, when he ruffled the feathers of then back-to-back F1 champion Alonso during an intense season-long title fight.

Alonso’s first race in the sport came in 2001 before winning titles with Renault – now known as Alpine – in 2005 and 2006.

The Singapore Grand Prix was won by Mercedes star George Russell, who recreated Hamilton’s celebration from winning the 2018 race with the Silver Arrows, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

F1 returns with the US Grand Prix on October 19.
