Days before August 18, when Long murdered her whole family, with just the three-year-old boy surviving, she sent her boss an apologetic message.

“I’m sorry for everything,” Long texted her boss Derek Fisher, according to the Daily Mail.

The deaths of the Long family members came as a shock to the town of Madbury, New Hampshire, and to Fisher himself.

Emily’s husband, Ryan, was diagnosed before he was killed, which Emily admitted was hard on the family.

The mother of three talked about her therapy journey and grief on TikTok.

In a video posted on August 7, the mother discussed wanting to seek psychiatric care, stating: “I hope I make the decision before I feel like it’s too late.”

Fisher told The Daily Mail that his stomach dropped when he first found out about the horrific murders committed by his former employee.

However, he claimed he knew something about Emily’s past that no one else knew.

Fisher said that just days before Emily shot and killed most of her family and herself, her found out she had stolen nearly half a million dollars from his business.

“I was in denial,” Fisher told the outlet.

“You wonder how someone you trusted so completely, who you had such a good relationship with, could be capable of something like this.

“I know she was having a difficult time. But ultimately, I think Emily had a lot of secrets that were too hard for her to deal with.”

Fisher and Emily began working together in 2017, when the mother was hired as an office manager for Fisher’s restaurant chain, Wing-Itz.

The owner said Emily was perfect for the role and he promoted her to director of operations in 2023.

Attorney General’s statement

On August 20, the New Hampshire Department of Justice released the following statement:

“Attorney General John M. Formella, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Mark B. Hall, and Madbury Police Department Chief Joseph McGann announce that autopsies have been completed on the bodies of Ryan Long (48), Emily Long (34), Parker Long (8), and Ryan Long (6) discovered inside their home in Madbury on Monday August 18, 2025.

“Associate Chief Medical Examiner Abigail Alexander conducted autopsies today on both minors Parker Long and Ryan Long.  Dr. Alexander determined that both children’s causes of death were single gunshot wounds of the head, and their manners of death are homicide.

“Chief Medical Examiner Jennie V. Duval conducted autopsies on both adults, Ryan Long and Emily Long.  Dr. Duval determined that Mr. Long’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and his manner of death is homicide.  Dr. Duval determined that Emily Long’s cause of death was a single gunshot wound of the head, and her manner of death is suicide.

“Based upon the information available at this time, it appears that in the early morning hours of Monday, August 18, 2025, Ms. Long took a handgun from the home and caused the deaths of Ryan Long and her two children, Parker and Ryan, and then took her own life immediately thereafter.  While investigators are becoming aware of various concerns/issues ongoing in the household at the time of the event in question, people should avoid speculating that this event was caused by a single reason or stressor.

“Citizens in crisis are reminded that they can call, text or chat with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 9-8-8, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

“No further information is expected to be released at this time.”

As director, she was responsible for handling cash and overseeing the company’s finances, while he continued to expand the chain along New England.

Fisher said he thought he had no reason to worry about Emily as she seemed to be a trustworthy employee and loving mother.

Emily occasionally brought her children into the office, where Fisher said it was apparent that they loved her.

“The kids loved their mom,’ Fisher said.

“They were always happy… I never saw any signs of negative behavior out of the children or the family.

“My experience with Emily was incredibly positive – up until I found out what she was doing.”

BLEEDING MONEY

In April 2024, Emily told her boss about her husband’s brain cancer diagnosis.

Fisher said Emily threw herself into her work, which she called an “outlet” for normalcy.

He said he tried to give her as much help as possible, including letting her work flexible hours and assuring her of her job security.

However, a year later, Fisher began to notice that his company was “bleeding cash.”

He knew his company was making money but didn’t know why he couldn’t afford to make payroll.

“I’d be in tears, saying, ‘We’re making money – so where’s it all going?’ But she just brushed it off,” Fisher recalled.

“She told me not to worry, that things would get better.”

As Fisher continued to worry about his business, Emily was sharing her inner thoughts online.

“I’m mourning my husband, I’m mourning my marriage, and it’s still there. It’s very confusing,” she said in a TikTok discussing her husband’s diagnosis.

Months after Emily confided in Fisher about her husband’s illness, he noticed that checks from his business had been written out in Emily’s name and deposited into her account.

Over $660,000 had been secretly stolen by Emily from the business over the course of two years.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Fisher said.

“I’d been in tears about money, and she showed no remorse at all.”

Fisher eventually asked to see Emily’s bank statements several times before she sent him a statement that had pages missing, Fisher said.

“The way she acted after that was bizarre,” he recalled.

“She pretended nothing was wrong – but you could see it on her face that something was seriously off.”

Emily and Fisher agreed to go to the bank on August 11, but she never showed.

The mother later sent Fisher a text message with three options: she resigns, works remotely or he fires her.

The next day, she sent an apologetic message to her boss.

Six days later, Emily shot her husband and children with a handgun and then shot herself.

The four bodies were found later that night, and the youngest son was found unharmed.

Investigators later found that Emily was accused of Fraud in 2016 after she allegedly skimmed $11,000 from a New Hampshire pub.

“Maybe this is a behavior that’s been going on for a very long time, and I was just the grand finale,” Fisher said.

It’s unclear what Emily did with the money.
