FORMER England star Mark Walters has been handed a special honour at Wembley, more than 30 years after his one and only senior cap.

The ex-Aston Villa, Rangers and Liverpool winger received a Legacy Cap, recognising his appearances for England at every professional level.

He was a fan favourite during his time at Rangers

Walters, now 61, turned up to the home of football with his son Dr Marlon Walters to accept the award in person.

Sharing a photo of the proud moment on social media, he posted on X: “My son Dr Marlon Walters and I collecting my legacy cap for playing for England at every professional level.”

Fans were quick to send their congratulations, with many praising Walters’ long-overdue recognition.

One wrote: “About time. One of the most underrated players of his era.”
Another added: “Trailblazer. Legend. Gentleman.”

A third fan added: ” Never forget the goal celebration against United at Wembley.”

Then a fourth said: “England and Rangers legend.”

Walters played for England U21s, B team, and made his senior debut in 1991, earning his single cap against New Zealand.

His club career was no less impressive, starring for top sides in England and Scotland, including a stint under Graeme Souness at Rangers.

He was also one of the early black pioneers in British football and has since been outspoken about racism in the game.

After hanging up his boots, Walters reinvented himself as an entrepreneur and community advocate.

He now runs football initiatives and works with charities to promote diversity and inclusion in sport.

The Wembley cap is a fitting tribute to a player who did it all, even if the England shirt only came once.
