FORMER Premier League star Tommy Widdrington has resigned from his role with National League side Aldershot Town.

The former Southampton player, 53, won the FA Trophy with the side at Wembley just five months ago.

That was despite having suffered two strokes last November that forced the boss to spend time away from the club.

He was suddenly rushed to hospital last year after falling ill, but returned to the dugout soon after.

He thanked the fans for their support during the turbulent period after winning the FA Trophy in front of 18,000 Shots fans in May.

He said: “There is not a prouder person in this stadium, I’m very appreciative of the support I’ve had during my health problems and the people of Aldershot have been incredible.”

But that wonderful moment did not carry through to this season as some might have expected.

Widdrington was handed a two-year contract in August, having been at the club since 2023.

But they currently sit 19th in the National League table, and are winless in their last four league games.

Fans had mixed reactions to the news, but the respect that exists for the manager is obvious.

One fan was incensed that the club let him leave, saying: “Shambles! I hope those constantly moaning are happy. Thanks for giving us our dream at Wembley.”

Another fan was sad to see him go, but felt it was the right time, saying: “Thank you Tommy for giving it your all. You brought us a huge moment, which we all are grateful for.

“This is likely for the best for us as a club as results and the same old problem were a recurring theme. Wish Tommy all the best in his future endeavours.”

The news has uncertain implications for Widdrington’s son Theo, who has played in midfield for Aldershot after arriving shortly after his father in 2023.

Widdrington also has another celebrity son, Kai, who is a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing.

Outside of his four years with Southampton, Tommy spent time with Wigan Athletic and Grimsby Town in a career that spanned 20 years.
