Seven-year-old William Brown was collecting a football when he was mowed down in Folkestone, Kent, on December 6.

An inquest heard today how William had been playing the game with pals in his front garden when the ball went over a wall.

When the youngster went to retrieve it, he was struck by a van.

This collision then pushed him into the pathway of another car, which also hit him.

His mother Laura Brown and her partner were tragically in the kitchen at the time at the time of the horror.

One of William’s pals had run into the house, which leads onto the A259, screaming that he had been hit by a car.

Katrina Hepburn, Area Coroner for Canterbury and South East Kent, said: “Ordinarily the boys would’ve told an adult, who would’ve gone to retrieve the ball, or asked someone to throw it back over the wall.

“But on this occasion William decided to jump over the wall to get it back.

“In doing so, a van collided with William, causing him to move into the pathway of another car, which hit him.”

Paramedics battled to save William for more than 45 minutes but he was sadly declared dead at the scene.

A cause of death was given as severe head injuries.

The coroner adjourned the inquest until a criminal investigation is completed.

Police said previously the crash involved two vehicles – a red Citroen car and a grey Peugeot van.

The van left the scene prior to the arrival of emergency services.

A 49-year-old man arrested over the hit-and-run crash has since been bailed until March.

Paying tribute, William’s mum Laura Brown told the BBC: “He was the sweetest boy in the world, so soft and gentle.

“Someone killed my son and left him in the middle of the road,” she said.

“Please help us find this person. I’m begging you. Do it for William.”

Any witnesses or those with CCTV or dashcam footage are being asked to contact police on 1622 798538, quoting reference MM/DGC/130/23.
