Mr Sunak, who is a Hindu, highlighted the “Christian values at the heart of this celebration of Christ’s birth”.

He said: “Christmas is a time of peace, joy, compassion.

And today, as we look ahead, let’s keep that promise of a brighter future burning into the New Year.”

He thanked NHS staff, police and the Armed Forces for “sacrificing their Christmases in the service of others”.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer also wished people a merry Christmas with his own message.

The Labour leader hailed the “military personnel for their steadfast commitment to our national security”.

A Sun on Sunday poll has warned warring Tories must unite and cut taxes to have a shot at winning next year’s general election, an exclusive poll for The Sun on Sunday suggests.

The results follow a bruising few weeks for Rishi Sunak, whose mutinous party has been trading blows over his Rwanda plan.
