LABOUR has vowed to deploy a 1,000-strong squad to track down failed asylum seekers and foreign criminals if it wins power.

The taskforce will seek to speed up the process to send people back where they came from within weeks.

Labour has vowed to deploy a 1,000-strong squad to track down failed asylum seekers and foreign criminals if it wins powerGetty

It will include agents both in the UK and abroad, with those overseas tasked with negotiating more returns agreements.

Pointing to the 40 per cent drop in the number of asylum removals since 2010, Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper blasted the Tories for letting the asylum system “descend into chaos”.

She added:“Without firm, fair enforcement of the rules, the system ends up in chaos, costs soar, confidence collapses and exploitation grows.

“The 40 per cent drop in returns of failed asylum cases since 2010 undermines the credibility of the entire system.

“That’s why Labour will set up a new returns and enforcement unit to speed up the system and make sure rules are respected.”

The squad, financed by savings from clearing the asylum backlog and ending the use of hotels, will also seek to crack down on illegal employment practices and collaborate with law enforcement to dismantle human trafficking networks.

It will be backed by a new fast track asylum casework system for safe countries and will have to provide a weekly update on progress on removals for the Home Secretary.
