The Nuke was defeated 6-3 by Michael van Gerwen in the final as he attempted to back up victories in Belfast and Manchester.

Van Gerwen embraced Littler after beating him 6-3

Littler reached the final by edging past Rob Cross and Luke Humphries, both by narrow 6-5 scorelines.

Van Gerwen, meanwhile, overcame Nathan Aspinall and Michael Smith 6-4 and 6-4.

Littler, 17, went into the night eyeing a record-equalling third win on the bounce – also achieved by Humphries earlier this season.

But he was thwarted by Van Gerwen, with the Dutchman returning to form to beat him 6-3.

After his win, MVG told Sky Sports: “About time! I made it a little bit hard for myself to be fair but it is what it is.

“The last few weeks has not been great for me but to come back with a win tonight feels good to me.

“I’m going to win more than four. I had to go deep tonight.

“To win night’s like this is not always about who’s playing well. It’s about who can handle the nerves.

“This gives me confidence.

“People write you off when you lose but I believe in my opportunities.

You need to make sure you keep you mind focused. It was an important one for me.

“I’ve put myself in a good position now.”

Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle wasn’t overly impressed with the final.

During the fifth leg, he blasted: “You will seldom see these two play this poor

“This feels so difficult for both players.”
