The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is now set to carry out an investigation into his death under standard procedure.
Field was jailed for life in 2001 for the rape and murder of 14-year-old Surrey schoolboy Roy Tutill.
The youngster was tragically killed in 1968 but justice wasn’t sought until the 90s.
Field was living in Solihull, West Mids, when he was stopped for drink-driving in 1999.
He had a DNA sample taken which cops then matched to the one taken in Tutill’s case.
During his trial Field, then 65, pleaded guilty to murder but not sexual assault before being caged for life.
The disturbed pensioner was also the main suspect in the disappearance case of David Spencer, 13, and Patrick Warren, 11.
The schoolboys vanished on Boxing Day in 1996 after playing near their homes, also in Solihull.
