CLIVE COX reckons his Ghost can scare the hell out of City Of Troy in Saturday’s 2,000 Guineas.

The top trainer has the unbeaten Ghostwriter ‘in tremendous shape’ heading in to the first Classic of the year at Newmarket.

The colt has been to the racecourse three times in his life and won every time, most recently in the Group 2 Royal Lodge back in September.

In an ordinary year, he’d be a lot shorter than the 14-1 on offer with Coral.

But with potential superstars City Of Troy and Rosallion dominating the betting, it’s anything but an ordinary year.

Not that Cox, 59, is shying away from the challenge, and he is happy his horse has been flying under the radar in the build-up.

Like most of his fellow trainers, he never considered running him in one of the big Guineas trials given their close proximity to the big’un.

Lambourn-based Cox told Sunracing: “It was always the plan to go straight to Newmarket, the trial races are just a bit too close for comfort.

“We’ve got plenty of work into him and he really is in tremendous shape, he’s really filled out over the winter.

“It suits me fine that we haven’t had too much written about us. I like to let the horses do the talking on the track anyway.

“Yes, the favourite looks special but our horse is very good and will run a big race.

“Whether our lad stays at a mile or goes up in trip after the Guineas, we will find out on the day.”

A total of 14 horses remain in contention for the first Classic of the season, with four Irish challengers headed by City Of Troy.

There are 19 fillies left standing for Sunday’s 1000 Guineas, with Aidan O’Brien’s Ylang Ylang and Karl Burke’s Fallen Angel currently vying for favouritism.
