PATRICK CANTLAY will walk up the aisle having been called a ‘scumbag’ the day before his wedding.

But Pat The Hat won’t suffer pre-nuptial nerves ahead of marrying fiancee Nikki Guidish — just like he was not ruffled in the slightest by being cast as the arch-villain in this Ryder Cup.

Cantlay, 31, and his caddie Joe LaCava were at the centre of controversy here in Rome.

First it was the Californian’s refusal to wear a cap amid suggestions it is because he was not being paid.

Then caddie LaCava waving his own at the taunting crowd and stepping across Rory McIlroy’s lie in Saturday’s fourballs.

‘Hat-Trick’ insists going bareheaded is no protest but the partisan crowd jeered him throughout as he earned America’s first point on the final day with a 2&1 singles win over Justin Rose.

There were chants of “you’re only here for the money” from the partisan crowd at Marco Simone Golf Club.

Even McIlroy, speaking after his own 3&1 win over Sam Burns, responded to Europe fans by removing his cap and saying: “I don’t have to be paid to wear this.”

But laid-back Cantlay, 31, did his talking with his clubs and was never behind against Rose.

Then, when asked by a British reporter if he didn’t wear a U.S. team hat this week because he didn’t want to have a tan line on his head for his wedding, he finally gave a smile.

Cantley said: “Well, I am getting married tomorrow, yes. I’m very excited about that,”

Captain Zach Johnson and the other 11 players then banged the tables in front of them in celebration.

Cantlay also revealed he had made up with McIlroy during the closing ceremony.

He added: “I was just saying congratulations, he played fantastic this week.

“I didn’t see the incident that happened on the green with Rory and Joe. I was wrapped up in a totally different head space.

“It was a crazy 24 hours. Last night I was just trying to give the guys a little bit of momentum, and fortunately, Wyndham Clark and I were able to close that match out and try to set a new tone going into today.

“But it was a steep climb.”
