While no children were injured, parents are being urged to remain vigilant at the playground.

The play area is just 200 yards from a Church of England primary school and nursery.

An official said the nails, which included one glued towards the end of the slide, appeared overnight and have now been removed.

The parish council clerk said: “We are shocked and horrified by the incident.

“It is beyond comprehension that anyone would sabotage a play space like that.”

They told the Mail: “The nails were found on toddlers’ swings as well as a slide and a rotating platform.

“They were glued onto the equipment with hard glue, a bit like superglue – but have now been removed.

“Should this reoccur then it might have to be closed but the area is being checked several times a day.”

Images of the nails have been circulating on social media and parents’ groups.

Captions have wrongly claimed the snaps are from playgrounds in London.

Thames Valley Police said: “We received reports of criminal damage at The Paddocks, Marcham between 1am on Sunday and 10am on Monday.

“Officers are investigating the reports.”

Around five miles south west of Oxford, Marcham is a historic village with a Georgian manor house and a 13th-century church.
