Hard truths

THE Left loathe her and Suella Braverman today showed why.

The Home Secretary’s Tory conference speech nailed the complacency and denial at the heart of Labour’s facile approach to mass illegal immigration and much else.

Suella Braveman’s bluntly honest speech at the Tory party conference was superbAlamy

It was superb for its blunt honesty.

The Left’s hand-wringing over small boat migrants and its pretence that they are all genuine asylum cases we must embrace at any cost . . . all of it is being rendered absurd and irrelevant by what Ms Braverman called the global immigration “hurricane” now under way.

Her critics need only look at the vast numbers pouring illegally across the borders of the EU or America, as well as ours, to know she is right.

Britain’s infrastructure is already buckling under the weight of our vast population increase from immigration — and only the Tories will change our New Labour-era laws to stem the flow.

They may have to go much further if the ECHR continues to stand in our way.

Labour opposes it all. Why?

Because, as Ms Braverman says, they think it’s “racist”.

And because they and so many of their supporters are well-off people living comfortable lives untroubled by illegal migration or, for that matter, criminal gangs, Just Stop Oil or the cost of net zero.

They virtue-signal on Twitter.

They sneer at Tories as “bigots”.

They hold “luxury beliefs”, in Ms Braverman’s words. It is impossible to disagree.

Harder to envisage is a Tory Government, in power for 13 years and beset by huge problems, campaigning as the “change” option.

That said, Rishi Sunak IS different from his predecessors.

He reads. He analyses problems in detail. He aims to take “the right decision, not the easy one”.

Given Labour’s cardboard alternative, it might yet work.

Rail rage

STAND by for yet another rehearsed cacophony of rage if the PM does axe HS2’s Manchester section today.

The region’s mayors, along with Labour, will claim the North has been betrayed.

Diehard fans of HS2 don’t care about the economics, only the politicsEPA

That the Tories promised this was the key to levelling up.

But everything has changed since the 2019 manifesto.

We have borrowed mind-boggling and unprecedented sums to survive Covid.

Our economy has been laid waste by Russia’s war.

Taxes are at a 70-year high. Growth is limping along.

Diehard fans of this railway, a £37billion Labour whim which has seen its budget triple and its dubious business case grow ever thinner, never explain how they would fund it.

What other budgets would they cut?

Why are we not better off spending less on a more rapid and far more useful transport upgrade for the North?

Don’t expect a serious answer.

The Left don’t care about the economics. Only the politics.
