Police confirmed a man aged in his 50s was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the savage attack and remains in custody.
The raging dog was destroyed at the scene to “ensure the safety of the public”, officers revealed.
A second dog was also seized from the property as a precaution.
Northumbria Police have not released the breed of either dog.
The force added: “There is no wider risk to the public, and officers remain in the area to offer reassurance to the community.
“Anyone with concerns or information about what has happened is encouraged to speak with an officer on duty.”
The horror is the latest in a spate of dog attacks across the UK.
It also comes amid a growing public debate after Rishi Sunak vowed to ban American bully XL dogs.
The PM said the breed will be outlawed under the Dangerous Dogs Act following a spate of terrifying attacks.
Anyone with information on the latest incident has been asked to call police on 101 quoting reference number NP-20231003-0979.
