LOUIS VAN GAAL has returned to his former club Ajax amid his battle with prostate cancer.

The Dutch manager has gone back to the Amsterdam-based side with the team in crisis.

The 72-year-old has landed a role as an adviser to help turn the club’s fortunes around.

Ajax currently sit 15th in the table and have won just one match in the league so far this season.

Things turned violent in a 4-0 loss to bitter rivals Feyenoord as fans threw flares onto the pitch then rioted and vandalised the stadium.

It led to director of football Sven Mislintat losing his job despite spending a reported £86million on players over the summer.

Van Gaal has legendary status at Ajax after managing them from 1991 to 1997.

Under his reign they won three Eredivisie titles, three KNVB Cups, the Champions League and UEFA Cup.

On his return to Ajax, Van Gaal said: “I want to help Ajax.

“I currently spend a big part of my life in Portugal, and this can be well combined with my role as an external advisor. I am willing to offer my football knowledge to the Supervisory Board.

“We must find our sportive way back up to the top, and we all have to contribute to that.”

Van Gaal has been out of work since leaving his role as Netherlands boss after last year’s World Cup.

The former Man Utd boss is battling prostate cancer after being diagnosed in April 2022.

Van Gaal is in and out of hospital as he undergoes treatment, recently revealing that it would be a “miracle” if he can go to the toilet by himself again.
