The all-conquering Brits landed their finest victory when it mattered most – clocking 45.186seconds in the Olympic showpiece at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome.

The triumph boosted Team GB’s hopes of finishing in the top five nations at this summer’s Games, which end on Sunday.

British cycling legend Victoria Pendleton told the BBC: “I am so happy for Team GB, I could see they were going to win. I am so happy for them, I actually feel quite emotional.

“Absolutely fantastic. Such a beautiful performance. It was powerful, it was confident.

To then break the world record, they haven’t just broken it today, they have smashed it. 45.186, that is incredible.

“It has finally put to bed the fact that the women’s sprint side of the cycling side is weakest.”

Earlier, Germany stunned the Netherlands to snatch the sprint-trip bronze medal.

Mexico beat China in the play-off for fifth-spot.

And Poland pipped Canada in the battle to see who finishes seventh and eighth.

Great Britain set a new World and Olympic record of 45.472 seconds in the women’s team sprint during the qualifying round at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome outside Paris.

In the first Olympic race with three riders and 750 metres of flat-out sprinting for the women, Katy Marchant hit out hard on her first lap, but Sophie Capwell appeared to slip slightly out of turn one, but she recovered quickly. With an extra shot of adrenaline, she closed the gap to the early leaders New Zealand and launched Emma Finucane, who put in a blistering final lap to get past the Kiwis.

New Zealand started as the second team and broke the Olympic record at 45.593 seconds.
