A CHIPPY is still cooking with a coal-fired frying range — 75 years after it was installed.

Upton Fish Shop is open only twice a week but has a cult following with people driving miles for their food.

Its website says “very little has changed since 1948” in its approach and that their range is “probably the last” in Britain.

Explaining the reliance of old methods, it adds: “The emphasis is upon providing the finest quality fish and chips produced in a way long, long forgotten by most.

“We believe that you won’t find better fish and chips anywhere else, and you certainly won’t find another shop with quite as much character or originality.”

The shop in Upton, Lincs, is open for only a combined six hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

It uses beef dripping for frying and the batter is a secret recipe.

One person online said that he had queued for 30 minutes but it was “the best cod, chips and peas I’ve ever had”.

Another person said: “My Mum lives in Gainsborough, so every time I visit from California we have to make the pilgrimage to Upton Fish Shop. Best Fish and Best Chips anywhere in the world, bar none!!!

“Why can`t you set up a shop near me in San Diego? Why???”

In related news, after an extensive judging process the best chippies in the country can be named, all hoping to be crowned Britain’s best.
