Warnings have been issued for several areas on the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku – including Kagoshima and Ehime, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Officials have urged people to immediately move to higher ground as one-metre waves are expected to smash the coast.

The 6.9-magnitude earthquake was followed by a 7.1 tremor off the island of Kyushu at a depth of 18 miles, the US Geological Survey said.

It comes after Japan was hit by a devastating earthquake on New Year’s Day – leaving 318 dead and thousands of homes destroyed.

The 7.6 magnitude quake sparked a tsunami – with waves reaching heights of 21ft in some areas.

Three people are still missing after the disaster.
