The British heavyweight, originally from Huddersfield, won the first round 6-3.
Round two went to his opponent with a rousing score of 9-1 after a series of strong head kicks.
But Salimi took the decisive third round 6-3 to deny Cunningham ultimate Olympic glory.
His win came after Rebecca McGowan suffered heartbreak as she lost out on bronze in the women’s 67kg+ taekwondo with a last second kick from Turkey’s Nafia Kus Aydin.
